The course introduces students to the media law in China and internationally and provides the opportunity for an in-depth study of the ethical problems and implications of media practices. The protection of fundamental rights and freedoms will be emphasised throughout the course and principles will be considered in the light of practical examples from a wide variety of media and circumstances. Students will be encouraged to develop their own views and rules about the boundaries of ethical journalism, protect and promote media freedom but also respect dignity and rights of others. This course trains students to devise operational plans and translation strategies for the media. Media translation includes bilingual publication, journalistic writings, and TV and radio broadcasting. Students will be given relevant translation knowledge and skills and will then apply that knowledge base to the practice of media translation. Special emphasis will be placed on the role of a media translator as a “gate-keeper” of information transfer and ethics in journalism in the sense of a media translator will sometimes act as the manipulator as well as the censor of the source information.
